Thomas J. Cleary joined the firm in 2010. Before joining Schonland & Associates, P.C., he served as counsel to a health care management company where he represented skilled nursing facilities, hospitals and individual clients. Today, Mr. Cleary concentrates on trust, estate, and long-term care planning, and devotes himself to representing clients in matters including risk management, regulatory compliance, debt collection, guardianships, conservatorships, Medicaid, Medicare, and MassHealth appeals, as well as general litigation, mediation, and dispute resolution services.   

Mr. Cleary is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Hiram College, where he was a recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award. He is a Magna Cum Laude graduate and Valedictorian from the Southern New England School of Law (now known as University of Massachusetts School of Law). While in law school, Mr. Cleary was a founder and the Editor-in-Chief of the Roundtable Symposium Law Journal. He was awarded the Faculty Academic Achievement Award, the Sarah Clarman Bernstein Prize for Academic Excellence, and the Pro Bono Program Honorary Designation, and was a participant in the Domenick L. Gabrielli Family Law National Moot Court Competition.

Mr. Cleary has also published numerous articles and other materials, including: In Impartiality We Trust: A Commentary on Government Aid and Involvement with Religion, 2 S. NEW ENG. ROUNDTABLE SYMP. Mr. Cleary is also an Adjunct Professor of Law for the University of Massachusetts School of Law at Dartmouth, where he is a faculty advisor to the law review program and teaches legal editing, research, and writing. He has lectured at numerous programs on the Massachusetts Uniform Probate Code, and has been a keynote speaker on trends and issues in trust, estate, and long-term care planning. 

Mr. Cleary serves on the Board of Directors for the Southern New England School of Law Alumni Association (now known as the Massachusetts School of Law Alumni Association) and serves as Chair of the Association’s Publications Committee. He is also an Associate Member of the Massachusetts Senior Care Association, and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Plymouth District Bar Association, and the Bristol County Bar Association.

Mr. Cleary is admitted to practice before all Massachusetts courts, as well as the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
